barbaraYes, believe it or not, but BARBARA MIGUEL, the “9-year old mother” named Krista in the ‘Nuwebe’ movie entry from the Philippines, truly won in the recently held five-day  Harlem  film festival in New York; not as a raffle winner or the likes, but as best actress of the HIFF.

It could have raised a few eyebrows, but looks like more hands were clapped for the youngest winner who bagged the much-coveted trophy by all  lady nominees in the best actress category.

Barbara Miguel, who is actually ten years old in real life, is no newcomer to acting, though.

Prior to HIFF, Barbara Miguel of GMA 7 has already won a Best Child Actress Trophy for her performance in the indie film “Migrante” (meaning migrant) at the  61st Film Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards which was held at the AFP Theater in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City on April 21, 2013.

She was also in the cast of Munting Heredera or Little Heiress  which is a family-oriented drama anthology in GMA 7, aired from May 2011 to February in 2012. under the creative mind of one Maryo J. De los Reyes, a Kapuso artist.

She was the sole choice among the 200 children who auditioned for the role, according to Nuwebe’s Director Joseph Israel Laban.  She stood out among the rest.   Sadly, she wasn’t there to personally receive her trophy.   It would have been so amazing to hear the ‘youngest winner‘ a.k.a. the ‘youngest mother‘ deliver her acceptance speech.

”Nuwebe is the Philippines’ only entry and was based on real life events on the life of one of the youngest mothers in the history of the Philippines.   Krista was impregnated by her own father;  something that is totally considered as taboo in social norms.

Among the casts are Jake Cuenca (who played as the father), Nadine Samonte (as the mother) and Anita Linda (as the grandmother).

In addition to Barbara Miguel’s winning, Nuwebe was also  nominated in Best World Film category.  Although it lost to ” Tu Seras Un Homme” (You’ll Be a Man), a French film, the whole production is proud to be among the best.

From the doors of Cinemalaya where it first competed, ‘Nuwebe’ has come out to  explore the world of film festivals and came back with a major award after just a short while!

Well, for one so young, it was such a great surprise, Krista Barbara.

May you continue to amaze us all, ‘Mommy’.
