BOSTON, Massachussetts – There is a group of German hackers claiming to have cracked the new iPhone fingerprint security scanner on Sunday. The news comes only two days after Apple Inc launched the techonoly along with the much-awaited installment to its iPhone series, the iPhone 5S. It will be embarrassing for Apple Inc If the claim is confirmed. The gadget company was leaning on the fingerprint scanner to differentiate its smartphones with offerings from competitors such as Samsung and HTC that offer competing models based on Google Inc’s Android operating system.
Fingerprint technology (biometrics) has been around for years on commercial security systems, but it is the first time to become available on a mobile device meant for the consumer market. The technology promises better protection against criminals and malicious eaves droppers.
The German hacker group known as the Chaos Computing Club (CCC) is the group claiming to have succeeded in defeating Apple’s Touch ID system, according to two security experts. However the security experts have yet to replicate the work.
“It certainly opens up a new possibility for attackers.” said Charlie Miller, one of the experts. He also adds that the hack as a “complete break”.
CCC is one for the world’s biggest and respected hack groups. The group stated that they targeted Apple’s Touch ID to dispel reports that suggest it would be difficult to crack. “Fingerprints should not be used to secure anything. You leave them everywhere, and it is far too easy to make fake fingers out of lifted prints,” a hacker named Starbug commented on the CCC site.
Apple representatives did not respond to requests for comment.
