Megan Young, 23 years old, just made history as the first Filipina to ever win the coveted Miss World crown in all the 63 years of this prestigious beauty pageant. Crowned as Miss World 2013, Young bested 126 candidates from across the world to win the coveted title. Earlier in the year, she won the title of Miss World Philippines 2013.
The pageant was held at Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center in Bali, Indonesia on September 28, 2013. TV ratings were high across the country and various social media were abuzz with excitement over the possibility of Young winning the crown.
Miss World Challenges
To prove that the pageant is more than just a parade of women in their bikinis (as in the first ever Miss World event) Miss World candidates went through a preliminary round of challenges. These challenge events, then gave points to candidates who in turn earns a place. Although they are not subject automatic qualification in the final round, winning a number of challenges can secure their place because of the additional points earned.
For Miss World 2013, Mega Young qualified in not just one, but three of the five challenges — placing first on the Top Model Challenge, 4th in the Multimedia Challenge and 5th in the Beach Fashion Challenge. The list of winners for this year’s challenges was announced on Friday, September 27, a day before coronation night.

Instead of the usual Top 5 in pageants, Miss World 2013 this year featured a ” Top 6″, because of the addition of Miss Gibraltar who automatically earned a spot — even if she wasn’t in the Top 10 — by virtue of the pageant’s People’s Choice award (Megan Young had ranked 2nd). The Top 6 were:
- Miss France (Marine Lorphelin)
- Miss Philippines (Megan Young)
- Miss Ghana (Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter)
- Miss Brazil (Sancler Frantz Konzen)
- Miss Spain (Elena Ibarbia Jimenez)
- Miss Gibraltar (Maroua Kharbouch)
Miss World Top 3
The final Top 3 amazed the audience, with Miss Philippines, Miss France, and Miss Ghana.
Young was asked, “Why should you be Miss World?” To this she replied, “I treasure the core value of humanity and that guides people why they act the way they do. I will use this to show other people how they can understand each other. As one, we can help society.”
And there you go, ladies and gentlemen, that answer earned her the title of Miss World 2013, and the first ever Filipina to win the pageant’s crown!
