This was Sen. Juan Ponce-Enrile’s reaction to Atty. Gigi Reyes’statement posted on a Facebook page. She expressed hurt and resentment over the senator’s camp’s ploy to disown her actions while serving as chief-of-staff of the former senate president in connection with the pork barrel scam.
Reyes’ disappointment with Enrile’s camp came after lawyer Atty. Enrique de la Cruz told in a radio interview that the senator ‘did not authorize’ any of his staff, including Reyes, to sign endorsement letters to NGOs in his behalf.
“If he had employees that didn’t follow this, or did something to divert the same fund to NGOs, it wasn’t in compliance with Senator Enrile’s instructions.”
Reyes’ accused the senator’s camp of betraying her, despite remaining loyal to the senator throughout the 25 years that she served him: ,
‘ IF INDEED THESE STATEMENTS ARE SANCTIONED BY OR COMING FROM MY FORMER BOSS, THEN NOTHING CAN BE WORSE THAN THIS KIND OF TRAVESTY AND BETRAYAL.’
The senator refused to elaborate further on the issue, even refusing to comment on his lawyer’s statement,
“I will not discuss my case if you don’t mind. You wait until I face it, you see me in the courtroom.”
Enrile was back in the senate after being hospitalized for 4 days from September 14-18. He related;
“Early Saturday morning, I was shaking, I asked the maid to take my blood pressure. It was 220/100. I called up my cardiologist. He said you better go to the emergency room of the Makati Medical Center,”
The senator, along with two others, Sen. Bong Revilla and Sen. Jinggoy Estrada are facing Ombudsman investigation for plunder cases while Atty. Jessica ‘Gigi’ Reyes is charged with malversations, direct bribery and other graft and corrupt practices, all in connection with diverting PDAF money through bogus NGOs.
Sotto: Senators have differences even with spouses, what more with COS?
Meanwhile, Sen. Vicente ‘Tito’ Sotto III tried to downplay the on-going finger-pointing between Sen. Enrile and his former close aide, Atty. Gigi Reyes, describing it as ‘normal’.
Sen. Sotto told over an interview with dzBB,
“That can really happen in the Senate and even in ordinary companies. There are cases of spouses having that problem, what more with COS? Some can have problems with their siblings, what more their COS?”
With regards to chief-of-staffs signing in behalf of the senators, he explained:
“I don’t know the way their office was run. We do not talk about these things. But trust and confidence between a senator and his or her staff [must] always [be] there because the senator usually arrives late in the office,”
He further explained that COS can almost do anything in behalf of a lawmaker except filing bills and disbursing finances.
“For example, the senator does not usually know the one seeking his or her endorsement for a project, so the COS can handle that.”
Sen. Tito Sotto is a part of the minority bloc in the senate, of whom two members – Enrile and Estrada – are both facing plunder charges before the Ombudsman.
