While she is really happy that her natural beauty has captured the hearts of many people online, the Badjao girl who went viral hopes that fame will help her and her family climb out of poverty.
In an article written by Rie Takumi of GMA News Online, it was disclosed that GMA reporter Lia Manalac del Castillo interviewed the new social media sensation Rita Gabriola, 13 years old.
Gabriola was spotted along the streets of Lucban, Quezon. She has been seen wandering around streets while asking for alms in order to feed her family. Topher Quinto, a professional photographer, was captivated by the physical features of the young woman. He took photos of her as she continues to beg for food or money from any stranger along her way.
The young girl thanked Topher Quinto, who took photos of her during the Pahiyas Festival in Lucban, Quezon; where she was begging for alms with her sibling.
“Masaya lang po ako at nagpapasalamat ako kay Kuya Topher, ako po ang napili niya. Kaya sobra-sobrang pasasalamat ko sa kanya [I am happy and thankful to Kuya Topher for choosing me as his subject. I am really grateful for what he has done],” she said.
She also thanked the people who made her pictures go viral online.
Gabriola said she is optimistic that the attention she is getting because of the pictures will help her fulfill her dreams.
“Kaya ko po gustong maging guro, gusto ko pong matulungan ang tulad ng mga kapatid kong bata. Gusto ko rin po sila maipag-aral. At sabi sakin ng tatay ko, gusto niya kong mapag-aral. Kasi kami na lang po ang pag-asa naming magkakapatid [I want to be a teacher because I want to help children, like my younger siblings. I want them to be educated. And my father also told me that that he wants me to go to school because education is our only hope],” she shared.
