- The personnel of the MMDA-accredited towing company tried to extort money from a car owner
- The MMDA advised motorists on what to do in case their cars will be towed
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has ordered the indefinite suspension of the MMDA-accredited towing company whose personnel tried to extort money from the owner of an unattended illegally parked car.
Inquirer’s Maricar Brizuela wrote in her article dated May 25, 2016 the MMDA announced that, pending the result of its investigation, all tow trucks of Arcson Towing Services, including tow truck with license plate number AVA 4494 that was used in the illegal towing scam, were suspended indefinitely.
Atty. Victor Nuñez, officer-in-charge of MMDA’s Impounding and Inspectorate Division, said the complainant and the Arcson Towing Services personnel have already met in his office.
Nuñez disclosed that there was a legitimate operation on the site where the incident happened.
“Actually there was a legitimate operation that was handled by MMDA Task Force Mabuhay Lanes. The Highway Patrol Group was there, and some MMDA traffic constables,” Nuñez told ABS-CBN News Channel.
He admitted though that the towing personnel committed lapses in their operation, specifically driving the complainant’s vehicle without her consent.
“The driver and the team leader of the towing admitted that they drove the towed vehicle on the way to Ultra impounding area,” he said, adding towing crew members can only drive a towed vehicle if given consent.
Nuñez advised motorists on what to do in case their vehicles are being towed.
“First, you should always ask for their IDs. In this particular incident, this towing crew failed to provide their identities and they weren’t wearing their IDs at all. That’s one clue that these persons are doing unscrupulous things,” he said.
He also said that towing companies cannot tow your vehicles without an escort from the Highway Patrol Group or any traffic constable from the MMDA.
