- Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao both retired from boxing
- Freddie Roach is still hoping for a rematch between the two boxing icons
- “I think Mayweather will be a priority if Pacquiao decides to return.” – Roach
Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao made it clear after his third clash with Timothy Bradley last April 9 that he’s retired and has decided to focus on his growing political career, but Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach is still hoping that his longtime ward will have another shot against retired former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.
He disclosed in a recent interview that in case Pacquiao, who is one of the newly-proclaimed senators in the Philippines, decides to come out of retirement, a rematch with Mayweather would be their priority.
Boxing Scene quoted him as saying: “Maybe [Pacquiao will] be back, it might be possible. This all depends on how everything will unfold in his life. Becoming a senator, he may simply not have the time to still be a boxer. I think Mayweather will be a priority if Pacquiao decides to return. I was not very happy with their first fight, but I think a new fight would be much better. I’d like to see them fight again.”
Last April, Roach said that although the two boxing icons spend their money differently, they are still big spenders and this would be an important factor if they decide to fight each other again in the future.
“Manny’s a generous person and gives a lot of money away to his countrymen. And buys poor people houses and builds churches and builds school and does good things with it.Mayweather buys things, a lot of cars and a lot of houses for himself it seems like. They’re both spenders. Sometimes those spenders have to fight again,” he said.
As for Mayweather, he emphasized that the only way he’ll come out of retirement is if his opponent is mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Conor “The Notorious” McGregor.
If the fight pushes through, he said it would definitely be a boxing match and he won’t accept anything below $100 million for the fight.
“We haven’t talked about money yet. And, you know me, that’s me. I’m gonna get a hundred million, of course. Every time I go out, you know, that’s my number,” he said.
