BEIJING, China – A Chinese detergent commercial is being dubbed “racist” and receiving criticism after showing a black man stuffed into a washing machine who then seems to magically transform into a fair-skinned Asian.
Al Jazeera mentioned in an article published on May 27 that the advertisement has provoked outrage and was labeled racist, although most of the anger comes from overseas than at home in China where it was greeted with apparent acceptance.
The controversial advertisement is for the “Qiaobi” brand and shows a black man whistling and winking at a young Chinese woman. The Chinese woman then calls the black man over, puts a detergent packet into his mouth, and then forces him headfirst inside the washing machine.
The Chinese woman was then seen sitting on the lid of the washing machine as the man shrieks inside the machine. After few seconds, a fair Asian man emerges in clean clothes that made the woman grin.
The commercial has provoked uproar on different part of the globe, especially in the US, and labeled it as an example of racist attitudes towards black people in China. However, the alleged “racist” commercial has attracted little attention in its home country, with few comments on social media, and fewer than 2,000 views of the same ad on popular video-sharing site Youku.
An article by GMA News said that throughout history, China has almost zero migration of people from African descent, although China has risen to become the continent’s biggest trading partner.
China’s traditional attitudes favoring white skin in women have contributed to bias against dark-skinned people in the country.
The Shanghai Leishang cosmetics, the company which produces the gel-capsule product in the commercial, did not give any statement regarding the issue.
Reports said that the advertisement uses the same music and sound effects as a previous Italian commercial where it shows a white man forced into a washing machine and transformed into a black man.
The Italian commercial was followed by the slogan, “Colored is better”.
