- A female student was captured for identity theft of Maricel Laxa’s family
- Using a fake Facebook account under Laxa’s and her family’s name, the student asked for money as donations for a bogus outreach program
- The fake accounts have been existing for 4 years
A 19-year-old information technology student has been arrested by the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) for creating fake Facebook accounts under the names of actress Maricel Laxa’s family.
PNP-ACG Director Police Senior Superintendent Guillermo Elleazar said the suspect was identified as Myca Acobo Aranda. She was nabbed last Tuesday when she went to a money remittance center to get the P5,000 Laxa’s friend sent in.
Laxa and husband Anthony Pangilinan said that they have been receiving reports that a fake account was made under their name and their children’s. But they did not worry over it until the account started asking money for outreach programs.
“Mas lumala nitong mga nakaraang buwan dahil may pera nang involved (It got worse these past few months because there is money involved) ,” Pangilinan said in an ABS-CBN story.
The same story said the fake online identities have been existing for four years.
“Whether passing note, asking for donations. May lumapit sa amin na siya raw ang kasintahan ng anak namin dahil anim na buwan na silang online nang may relasyon ni man lang nakilala nung bata,” Pangilinan also narrated.

According to a story by Inquirer.net, Aranda will be charged for violation of the identity theft provision of the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, child abuse provision of the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act and swindling or estafa under the Revised Penal Code.
