Senator Miriam Santiago is rethinking her political life less than a month before she ends her third term at the Senate.
The feisty senator is currently recuperating in a private room at the Makati Medical Center after being taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital on Tuesday evening, May 31, when she developed pneumonia due to complications of her lung cancer.
Her supporters flooded her official Facebook page with well-wishes and prayers when news broke that she was taken to the ICU.
In a statement issued by her media office, Senator Santiago said: “I was buoyed by the Facebook messages. I fully intend to recover, and I am rethinking the political life. It is very soul-devastating.”
Over a week ago, the lady senator wrote to Senate President Franklin Drilon to inform him that she is extending her medical leave after she developed anorexia as a side effect of one of new anti-cancer medications. She said anorexia is rendering her physically and mentally weak.
According to her staff, the senator is now in a stable condition.
Senator Santiago ran in the May 9, 2016 presidential elections, but lost to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. It was her third time to run for the highest elective position in the country. She lost the presidential race in 1992 to Fidel V. Ramos and in 1998 to Joseph Estrada.
