Miss Philippines Earth candidate Bellatrix Tan has aired her response to the first question and answer segment of the prestigious beauty pageant after it became viral.

During the Miss Philippines Earth coronation night on Saturday, June 11, the Top 12 candidates were asked to pick a hashtag of trending topics in our society out of a bowl and elaborate.

Tan picked #ElNiñoLaNiña and she said: “El Niño, La Niña. El Niño is what we are facing right now. If we do simple things like planting trees, then we will not experience drought, right? So if we start now, we will achieve La Niña. Thank you.”

She received negative criticisms over her very confusing answer.

In an interview with DZMM on Monday, the Zamboanga-native explained that she knows El Niño and La Niña but she wasn’t able to clearly express herself.

ABS-CBN News quoted her as saying: ““I know po talaga yung El Niño and La Niña. Kasi alam ko po talaga na yung El Niño, drought po, dry. Sa La Niña naman po, heavy rainfall. Kasi nung na-realize ko na mali pala ‘yung pag-deliver ko, ‘yung pag-answer ko, bigla pong nag-react na ako. Sinabi ko na nga po dun sa host na alam ko kung ano ang La Nina, heavy rainfall. Hindi ko po ma-explain kung bakit ganun po [ang naging pagsagot ko],” she said.

[I really know El Niño and La Niña. I know that when there’s El Niño, there’s drought, dry. As for La Niña, there’s heavy rainfall. When I realized that the way I delivered my answer was incorrect, I reacted immediately. I even told the host that I know La Niña means heavy rainfall. I can’t explain why my answer came out like that.]

Tan said that if she can turn back time, she would’ve answered: “El Nino and La Nina are both effects of climate change. If we don’t do our part, we will really experience drought and heavy rainfall. Act now so we can have a better future.”

As for her message to her bashers, Tan said that they should try joining a national beauty pageant so they’ll know how hard it is.

“Sobrang hirap po ng Q&A kahit gaano kasimple ‘yan. ‘Di ba po ang dami ring beauty queens na nagkakamali sa question and answer?” she said.

[Q&A portion is very difficult no matter how simple it seems. A lot of beauty queens commit a mistake in the question and answer, right?]
