- Salonga told Brimner that she will be an amazing Annie
MANILA, Philippines – Tony Award-winning singer and stage actress Lea Salonga met the new “Annie” Krystal Brimner who will be alternating the role with Annie Isabeli Araneta Elizalde.
Salonga, who played the titular role in Repertory Philippines’ production of “Annie” back in 1980, sang the song “Maybe” with the 9-year-old performer who will soon wear Annie’s iconic red dress in the Resorts World Manila’s (RWM) upcoming stage production.
A video of their performance was uploaded to Youtube on Thursday, June 2.
After their duet, the “The Voice Kids” coach praised Brimner; saying: “You sound fantastic. You sound wonderful. I think you will make an absolutely fantastic, fabulous, amazing Annie. And I look forward to coming and watch you. I will let you know when I’m coming so that you’re not shocked. And I think you’ll be okay.”
She also gave the young performer a tip based on the fact that Annie is an orphan from New York City
She said: “New York City kids are tough, but they’re smart and very charming. So, be all that and you’ll be fantastic!”
According to an article published by Theater Fans Manila, Filipina-Scottish Brimner was born in San Diego, California and moved to the Philippines in 2009.
Brimner played “Angel”, the daughter of Edgar (John Lloyd Cruz) and Kaye (Meryll Soriano), in Erik Matti’s film “Honor Thy Father”.
She won the Metro Manila Film Festival 2015 Best Child Performer for her role.
Brimner is very excited as she starts venturing into theater roles.
“It’s different because in (making) movies, Direk always says, “cut!”, while in this stage play, it’s all straight — there’s no stopping, it’s all going to flow straight,” she said.
“Annie” will open on September 30, 2016, at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila.
