Three students lost their phones to snatchers while playing Pokemon Go in Hulme, Manchester; less than 24 hours after the police issued a warning about the risks of criminals taking advantage of the new craze.

In an article written by Neal Keeling of Mirror, it was disclosed that the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) City Centre disclosed the incident through its Twitter account.

“GMP warning on Pokemon Go risks soon confirmed as three students robbed of phones in Hulme last night chasing Pokemon,” GMP tweeted.

Det. Supt. Joanne Rawlinson from GMP ’s public protection division urged players to be cautious about alerting strangers to their locations. In addition, they are being advised to play the game with friends in groups and avoid playing near roads. Also, they are reminded to keep devices out of sight because they would know when Pokemons are near as their devices will vibrate.

“We know that criminals move quickly to exploit the latest developments to target victims and Pokemon Go will already be in their sights. There have already been incidents in America where young people are thought to have been targeted through the app. I would urge parents to speak to their children about the app and the best ways to make sure they stay safe. Talking to your child is one of the best ways to keep them safe,” Rawlinson noted.

Pokemon Go

Pokemon Go is built on Niantic’s Real World Gaming Platform and will use real locations to encourage players to search for Pokemons in the real world.

“Pokemon Go allows you to find and catch more than a hundred species of Pokemon as you explore your surroundings. The Pokemon video game series has used real-world locations such as the Hokkaido and Kanto regions of Japan, New York, and Paris as inspiration for the fantasy settings in which its games take place. In Pokémon Go, the real world will be the setting,” it was stated on Pokemon’s website.
