- Lawyer sued a fellow FB user for insinuating he was involved in illegal drugs
- Derogatory comment was in response to his anti-Duterte post
- He originally railed at Duterte’s delay in signing the FOI and his promise to release GMA
MANILA, Philippines – In what could be the first case of cyber-libel against a Rodrigo Duterte supporter, a lawyer sued a fellow Facebook user after the latter insinuated he was involved in illegal drugs.
Vincent Isles, a lawyer based in Cebu City, filed the case against a certain Anrey Jay Nebres of Davao City for allegedly making the unflattering comments.
In his complaint-affidavit, Isles said that Nebres’ reply to his original post — which criticized the president for not signing the Freedom of Information (FOI) executive order sooner as well as his promise to free former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo — besmirched his reputation and made him out to be a drug addict/pusher.
“Vincent wala pa lage ka nisurender? Dili na baya mudawat ang puninarya ug patay kay nagtapun og na mga lawas nga wala gipanguha basi mabaligya ka sa nagskwela ug medicine looy pud,” read Nebres’ comment on his post.
[Vincent” why have you not surrendered yet? Funeral parlors are not accepting bodies anymore because the bodies are piling up; you may end up being sold to medical students which would be a pity.]
In his complaint, Isles said Nebres’ comment “alluded to the series of extrajudicial killings of suspected drug users and pushers, imputing that I, a lawyer of good standing, am a drug user or pusher or both, a public and malicious imputation of a crime against his honor.”
The complaint called on Cebu’s provincial prosecutor to conduct a preliminary investigation on Nebres.
A copy of the complaint can be seen posted below Isles’ original post in the Facebook page Maghisgot Kitag Politika, Bay along with Nebres’ dare to Isles to make good on his threat to sue him.
