MANILA, Philippines – Eliaquim “Jack” Labang, the man who earlier earned the ire of President Rodrigo Duterte’s supporters for his brazen dare, is now the darling of the online community.
On his Facebook, Labang — chef and owner of Quim’s Cake Bakeshop and Café — shared pictures of his initial drive to give away the P5 million worth of free cakes he promised if Duterte won the presidency.
The first batch of free cakes was given out on Friday, July 1. Labang gave the unclaimed slices to street children.
In another post, Labang also shared a picture of his bakeshop giving out free cakes to residents of Agham Road, Quezon City whose houses were hit by a fire on Sunday, July 3. The drive was made in response to someone who suggested he also give them free cakes to lift their spirits.
Labang’s actions have earned him praise on social media; with many commending him for not only keeping his word but for also helping out the less-fortunate.
The reactions were a far cry from the fury Labang faced after he ridiculed and betted on Duterte losing his presidential bid.
He has apologized since then and congratulated Duterte for winning the elections. He also reassured the public he would be keeping his promise.
Quim’s Cake Bakeshop and Café will be giving away the free cakes on a bi-monthly basis. Those who want to avail must follow these steps:
