Actress and politician Aiko Melendez shared her weight loss journey after shedding off 50 pounds and going down six inches on her waistline.
In less then a year, the actress went from 195 pounds to 148 pounds with a waistline coming from 34 inches to 28 inches now.
She said her decision to lose weight came after she turned 40 years old last December. Melendez adds that she did this as a “gift” to herself and to maintain good health.
“Noong 40th birthday ko, ang wish ko talaga, kasi all my life I’ve been doing things sa ibang tao. Sabi ko [During my 40th birthday, my wish, because all my life I’ve been doing things for other people. I said,] at this point when I turn forty, I’d like to gift myself to look better… Kasi [Because] when you’re forty, your metabolism slows down… Now that I’m beginning to be healthy again, ‘yung lifestyle ko changed [my lifestyle changed]. When I sweat, I feel good kasi endorphin mo iyan, e [because it’s your endorphin],” she told the Philippine Entertainment Portal.
The actress, however, admitted that she also succumbed to criticisms due to her weight.
“Dumating ako sa point na, lalabas ako at may magpapa-picture sa akin. Pagtalikod ko ang maririnig mo, ‘Ang taba naman niyan, nakakalokah.’ So ‘yun, [I came to a point that when I go out and someone wants a photo with me. When I turn my back, you’d hear, ‘She’s so fat. It’s crazy.’ So there,] I took it to heart. Sabi ko [I said], ‘It’s my obligation to the viewers also that I look good and I feel good about myself.’ Kasi [Because] if I don’t feel good about myself, magra-radiate ‘yun sa aura ko. Hindi magiging positive ‘yung outcome sa akin [that aura would radiate. The outcome won’t be positive for me],” she explained.
Now that she has seen good results from her training, Melendez plans to continue hitting the gym and maintaining a good diet. And while she admits that she would love going back to her size 26 from her younger years, she continues to treat every exercise day as if it were her first and that she regularly monitors her calorie intake.
