- Comedienne Ate Glow says “love knows no gender” after getting married in London
- Ate Glow now goes by the name of Renee Hampshire
- She says that coming out as a transwoman is “a personal battle”
Stand-up comedienne and political impersonator Ate Glow is now happily married to her British boyfriend, after a simple ceremony in London in the United Kingdom.
Reflecting on her marriage, as well as the recent news about the coming out of Angelina Mead King as a transwoman, Ate Glow, who was formerly known as Rene Boy Facunla but is now officially Renee Hampshire, says that “love knows no gender.”
“I don’t know them personally. So, ‘yung situation nila [So their situation], it only proves that love knows no gender. Hindi naiintindihan ng ibang mga tao na ‘yung situation ni [Angelina], e, mahirap. [Other people do not understand Angelina’s situation so it’s difficult.] Coming out is a personal battle,” she explained to the Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP).
She also elaborated on her journey in finally identifying herself as a transwoman.
“Iba ang sitwasyon ng mga transgender women. [It’s a different situation for transgender women.] It’s a long road to finding one’s self. Like in my situation, I didn’t identify myself as a transgender woman before, mainly because I didn’t know about it. Sa Pinas kasi, e, it’s either you’re a boy, girl, bakla, or tomboy. [Because in the Philippines, you’re either a boy, girl, gay, or lesbian.] So, growing up, I thought that I was gay; although deep in my heart, I felt that I was a woman,” she said.
It was only while attending college at the University of the Philippines that she found the right label to identify herself.
“I was exposed to more ‘labels’ and ‘terms.’ That’s when I started to learn about transgender/transsexual,” she said.
Now as a happily wedded woman, the comedienne is focusing on adjusting to her new life with her husband.
“Talagang super busy ko po kasi rito, naglipat kasi kami ng bahay. Then, nag-aayos ng mga papers. Nag-change na kasi ako ng status dito sa London. [It’s been super busy here because we just moved house. Then, I’m fixing papers since I have changed status here in London],” she shared.
