- PNP chief revealed the number of mayors involved in the illegal drug trade
- He said some have already texted him to clear their name, he told them to go to Duterte
- He added he was saddened by the number, told the mayors to prepare for a confrontation
MANILA, Philippines – Now it’s the mayors.
Days after President Rodrigo Duterte tagged five police generals as the purported protectors of drug lords, PNP chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa revealed that at least 23 mayors across the country were also involved in the illegal drug trade.
According to Dela Rosa, many of the mayors in Duterte’s list have been texting them to deny the allegations. However, he told them to bring the matter to Duterte himself.
“Marami nang nag-text sa akin kahapon. Sabi ko sa kanila, you clear your name sa nag-announce, dun kay presidente, ‘wag sa akin,” he told GMA News.
[Many texted me yesterday. I told them, you clear your name to the one who announced, to the president, not to me.]
Dela Rosa added he also found it sad so many mayors were in the list. He also warned them of an impending confrontation should they persist in their illegal activities.
“Nakakalungkot na malaman natin na may mga mayor na involved,” he said. “I hope na ‘yung mga mayor na ‘yun nag-aarmas nang husto para makipag-giyera sa ‘tin.”
[It’s sad to know that many of our mayors are involved. I hope they arm themselves properly so that we can wage war against them.]
Duterte earlier said many local officials across the country were involved in illegal drugs.
“Maraming mga mayor dito, they’re running the show,” he said. “We have a mayor sa Mindanao, puro mayor, may babae pa.”
However, he declined to give their names pending the results of further investigation.
