PNP SAF to man New Bilibid Prison

  • To effectively address concerns regarding drugs trade inside New Bilibid Prison (NBP), all Bureau of Corrections guards will be replaced
  • PNP SAF will man the NBP for three months
  • Marines will then replace the SAF

The Philippine National Police Special Action Force (PNP SAF) will soon man the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) and replace all Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) guards.

Deployment will be made possible by Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II who disclosed that this may only take place for a period of three months so that they don’t ‘overfamiliarize’ themselves with the convicts, an article by Ina Reformina on ABS-CBN News stated; adding that the Marines will then take the place of the SAF thereafter.

Curbing drug problems has become the initial marching order of President Rodrigo Duterte who promised to address the problem among his administration’s priority undertaking to address criminality across the country.

The new president has branded the New Bilibid Prison as one of the problem areas considering that convicted drug lords are still able to continue with their operations even while in detention.

Even during his campaign, Duterte, had mentioned the NBP as a center of drugs trade because thousands of drug suspects are detained for their illegal activities but still continue their illicit trade.

These are the things that we have to stop and that is why I said I would be harsh, not cruel, but I would be harsh and I have no tolerance for drugs. Zero. So, this is the fight that we have now. Those of you who are on vacation from the fields in Mindanao and in the Visayas… you might want just to join the hunt for them. We will eliminate the drug lords once and for all. We have to stop this practice in Bilibid,” Duterte was quoted in an article published by Philippine Star dated July 2.

In addressing the social menace, Duterte reiterated that he would risk everything to put an end to the drug problem.

As such, Aguirre has recommended for the appointment of Marine Major General Alexander Balutan as new BuCor director-general under an emergency power mechanism since he is a military man and the SAF is under PNP.
