Comedienne and actress Pokwang credits fellow funnyman Eric Nicolas as the one who discovered her and helped launched her career in showbiz.
Pokwang, who is Marietta Subong in real life, was just a guest in one of Nicolas’ shows in a comedy bar in Cubao, Quezon City, when she first showed her stand-up prowess.
“Sa comedy bar kasi, comedian ako doon, pumasok sila [Pokwang] at gumimik sila as guests… Aba, pumanhik ito, nakainom na, nandoon din ‘yung mga may-ari tapos banter, banter, ayaw magpatalo. So bumaba ako, sabi ko, ‘Boss, okay ito wala tayong babae, pwede nating ipasok.’ Noong time na ‘yon, wala siyang trabaho. [In the comedy bar, I was a comedian there at that time, Pokwang and her group went in as guests… Well, she was drunk and started talking, while the owner was there and she bantered and bantered and did not cave in. So I went down, I said, ‘Boss, I think this one’s okay since we don’t have a female act, we can let her in.’ During that time, she had no job],” Nicolas explained during an interview at Magandang Buhay with Pokwang in ABS-CBN.
The following day, Pokwang performed stand-up comedy and eventually became a regular at the comedy bar with her own group of followers.
Eventually, Nicolas encouraged Pokwang to join the reality talent competition Clown in a Million where she emerged as the champion.
Her win helped launch her career in television and showbiz.
Pokwang says she owes a debt of gratitude to Nicolas for pushing her to try out her talents in showbiz. However, the male comedian says it was her determination and hard work that led her to her fame.
“Sinasabi ni Pokwang, utang na loob niya sa akin, sabi ko hindi niya utang na loob ‘yon kasi ikaw ang gumawa ng destinasyon ng buhay mo na maging Pokwang ka. Kasi kung tinutulungan kita diyan pero ‘di mo rin ginalingan, eh wala ka rin dito. [Pokwang says that she owes me a debt of gratitude but I say that it isn’t a debt since she made her own destination to be Pokwang. Because if I helped you out but you still did not do well, you wouldn’t be here],” he explained.
