Vice President Leni Robredo has expressed support for President Rodrigo Duterte’s pronouncement that no demolition will be allowed unless the residents are assured of  a relocation site.

“We support President Rodrigo Duterte’s statement regarding the importance of relocatable, safe, and sustainable housing for Filipinos who are about to be relocated,” Robredo said in a statement, as quoted in an article written by Rose-An Jessica Dioquino of GMA News Online.

The vice president, who is also the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) chief, noted that she believes in advocating for the dignity of people who are relocated.

“We believe in advocating for the dignity of those who are relocated, and that necessitates houses that have connections to electrical lines and have running water. Moreover, relocation sites should also be areas where residents may have livelihood options and have access to jobs and schools,” she stated.

Earlier, Duterte officially declared that shanties of squatters will not be demolished until the government finds a suitable relocation site.

“During my time, there will be no demolition if there is no relocation. I won’t let it happen,” the president said.

“If you destroy their houses, they have nowhere to go. Ano? Parang aso? [What are they? Like dogs?],” he added.

Duterte promised to generate funds and spur economic activity so that the poor can have sources of livelihood.

“I would be very generous to them. I’d look for money. That’s what we want to do. We will go for a suitable relocation,” the president assured.

“We have to build new industries. We have to create an activity, economics, or otherwise,” he added.
