Viral: Man claims police threatened to shoot his friends caught kissing inside a car

  • Man posted his friends’ harrowing encounter with police
  • He said they were kissing inside their car when they were approached by police officers
  • The officers made them step out of their car, took their IDs, and threatened to shoot them

MANILA, Philippines – Amid the intensified campaign on illegal drugs, one man is complaining that the police may soon become drunk with power.

On his Facebook, a certain Apa Agbayani claimed that policemen threatened to shoot his two friends whom he said were kissing inside their vehicle which was parked along B. Gonzales Street in Quezon City.

“Okay, putting this out here so more people can read it. Got a distressed phone call a couple of nights ago. Friends were parked along B. Gonzales, kissing  — as is normal among college couples and also 100% legal — when they were approached by police officers,” began his post.

According to Agbayani, the officers ordered his friends to step out of the vehicle, took their IDs, and then threatened to shoot them.

“They were told to step out of the car. The officers got their IDs. There was a blatant threat made to shoot. Eventually my friends managed to talk their way out of it, but the incident really left us shaken,” he said.

Describing the whole incident as deeply disturbing given the spate of drug-related killings, Agbayani called on the police and the government not to get carried away.

“This is starting to feel like a police state. We need to be careful, but we also need to find it in ourselves to be angry and to demand an end to this,” he said.

Given the current political climate and the increasing frequency of killings, this is alarming. These are the very people who are supposed to make us feel safe, and yet they create an atmosphere where no one can feel safe.

True, some of us are safer than others. And some of us have the means to get out of these sticky situations. But all of us should be alarmed and deeply disturbed by what happens to those who can’t make that phone call, who aren’t given a chance to explain themselves.

This is starting to feel like a police state. We need to be careful, but we also need to find it in ourselves to be angry and to demand an end to this.
