MANILA, Philippines – She found him very nice.
Airing her thoughts on her first meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte, Vice President Leni Robredo said the country’s top leader treated her well during their brief exchange at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)’s turnover rites last Friday afternoon, July 1.
“For the record, he was very, very nice to me. I am very hopeful that despite the seemingly rough start, we will have a good partnership all for the love of the country,” GMA News quoted her as saying.
Robredo even admitted that she in fact was preparing herself to be possibly snubbed by Duterte considering they came from different camps.
“I was expecting for the worst, that he would just ignore me. You know, I was preparing myself. But when he was coming up the stage and I greeted him, he quickly acknowledged me,” she said. “His first line was, ‘At last we finally meet.’ He was nice the entire time.”
Robredo also revealed that she and Duterte will have a second meeting any time this week. She also hoped their first cordial encounter would lead to a healthier working relationship between them.
“We need to have a healthy working relationship,” she said. “So after our first meeting I’m even more hopeful that our relationship will still improve.”
Duterte and Robredo’s first meeting has been generally well-received by the public; with many saying that it may finally break the ice between the country’s top two officials.
