It’s been years since former matinee idol Rustom Padilla came out as a transgender woman named BB but it’s only last August 18 that he filed a petition to legally change his name to Binibini Gandanghari and his gender from male to female in California.
In his Instagram account, the 48-year-old actor expressed his excitement as he shared several photos of his petition document.
He captioned his first post: “And then… It’s really just a matter of time now. #itallstartswiththename #longtimecoming #thisisit #BeingBbGandanghari”
In another post, he wrote: “#beingbbgandanghari: CHANGE is coming… Big time!!!”
In a previous interview. he stated that the name he chose was derived from the Filipino words Binibini, which means Miss, an honorific for a lady and Gandanghari is a portmanteau of the words ganda, which means beauty and hari, which means king. He also added that adding that BB refers to his motto “‘Be all that you can be”.
According to an article published by GMA News Online, in 2009, after he came back from a three-month stay in the US, he declared that he’s a woman and he should be called BB.
“I’m a woman, so call me BB. I’d really appreciate if you call me BB. Rustom’s not here. BB’s here, she’s alive and kicking! BB’s a character that people are gonna watch and I’m gonna portray. So BB’s here to stay.
That’s my name. She is a God-fearing, loving lady. I am a woman. I am a woman. Bebe’s a woman…Emotionally, physically, biologically, spiritually, psychologically, socially.”
The hearing for his petition is scheduled on November 16.
