- He said his family always believed his father deserves to buried at the Libingan
- He also said Duterte’s decision would help end decades of divisiveness
MANILA, Philippines – With preparations for the transfer of the remains of his father Ferdinand Marcos to the Libingan ng Mga Bayani underway, Sen. Bongbong Marcos thanked President Rodrigo Duterte for the gesture he described as “kind, rightful and healing”.
“We are deeply grateful to President Rody Duterte for allowing the burial of my dad at the Libingan ng mga Bayani this September. It has always been our family’s position that it is our father’s right under the law to be buried there being a soldier and a former President of this country,” wrote the younger Marcos in his Facebook.
Describing his family as forward-minded, the senator said he hoped the decades of divisiveness would finally be healed with Duterte’s move.
“Our campaign has always been towards achieving unity to move the country forward. And it is this kind of pronouncement that we hope could end the decades of divisiveness that have been imposed upon us by our leaders. We would like to thank President Duterte for this kind, rightful and healing gesture,” he said.
The transfer of the late strongman’s remains to the Libingan has sparked a fierce clash between his supporters and critics who say Marcos does not deserve to be buried there due to his dictatorship and questionable war record.
Duterte had made the burial of Marcos at the Libingan one of his campaign promises; saying that he deserves to be buried there because he was a former president and soldier regardless of his track record.
Opponents of the plan have vowed to file an injunction before the Supreme Court.
