Determined Duterte to make De Lima’s driver a state witness

  • President said he has many sources, including De Lima’s driver, who can pin her down
  • He is confident of his evidence, said he will step down if he is lying
  • He also defended his expose, said De Lima has no moral standing as a public official

MANILA, Philippines – After making his scathing expose against Sen. Leila de Lima, President Rodrigo Duterte is mulling the possibility of making the senator’s driver a state witness against her along with several other sources on her alleged links to the drug trade.

“He can become a witness. Why would I file a case?” “I can use many people. I can use a prisoner. I can use her lover who is her driver,” the Philippine Star quoted him as saying.

Duterte, who accused De Lima of maintaining an affair with her driver Ronnie Palisoc Dayan whom he also tagged as a bagman of drug lords in Muntinlupa, said he is even betting his office on the reliability of his evidence.

“You want to know if it’s true, go to the justice department and to the Commission on Human Rights, validate it yourselves and if you accuse me of lying, get back to me,” he said. “You want to know the truth? If I was lying, you can change me.”

The president also defended his expose; saying De Lima is a public official whose own questionable morals make her unfit for office.

“She created this scandal. She knows that she is a public official. What spare the family? De Lima, your life is an open book,” he said. “She has a scandal at the CHR, scandal at DOJ, and she’s talking about family?”

As fair play, however, Duterte said he is giving the senator a chance to defend herself.

“She can have all the time in the world,” he stressed.
