- An ISIS related group is plotting to bomb the 2017 Miss Universe pageant
- A video was posted in a pro-ISIS social media channel that shows how to make a bomb which will be used to attack the international beauty pageant
- The 2017 Miss Universe pageant will be held in Manila on January 2017
After the excitement prompted by the announcement that the Philippines will be hosting the 2017 Miss Universe pageant, a serious threat looms as an affiliate of Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist group is targeting the international beauty pageant.
Officials from the Department of Tourism (DOT) confirmed that the ISIS-related group is threatening to bomb the Miss Universe pageant, as per an article published by Rappler. But the tourism board insists that the country is ready to hold the pageant in 2017.
In a pro-ISIS social media channel, Telegram Messenger, tracked by the terror-monitoring SITE Intelligence Group, a group called ‘IS Philippines Supporters’ posted a video on how to “create a bomb for Miss Universe,” referring to the beauty pageant to be held in Manila.
The video, posted on Monday, August 9, showed how to make an explosive belt for suicide operations and called on to ‘everyone who can’ to launch an attack at the event scheduled for January 2017.
Addressing ‘brothers who love martyrdom’, a jihadi issued a widespread threat, urging terrorist supporters to ‘target the blood of foreigners whose nations have participated in the war against ISIS’, as per an article published by Fox News.
DOT acknowledges the threat is serious but assures that the country can handle such situation as the country successfully managed the visit of Pope Francis in 2015, as well as the world leaders who came for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit.
National police spokesman Senior Superintendent Dionardo Carlos shared that an intelligence group will be assigned to handle the threat.
“That’s going to be looked at,” he said, without elaborating.
