- President weighed in on jailed OFW in Indonesia
- He said he hopes to ease her burden when he goes to Indonesia next month
- Veloso family earlier appealed to Duterte to help her
MANILA, Philippines – Set to embark on his first international trips next month, President Rodrigo Duterte said he hopes to do something to help jailed Mary Jane Veloso when he goes to Indonesia next month.
“Si Veloso. Ewan ko kung anong [About Veloso, I don’t what], I’m praying that I could do something for her,” ABS-CBN quoted him as saying.
Veloso was convicted of carrying drugs in Indonesia and has been on death row since 2015. She was supposed to be executed last year but was saved at the last minute due to an appeal by the previous administration to Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
She has been languishing in jail since then and has yet to testify against her alleged recruiter Maria Kristina Sergio and the drug ring that purportedly tricked her into bringing the drugs.
Last May, Veloso’s family also appealed to Duterte to help Mary Jane.
[We are appealing to President Duterte, in his trip to Indonesia, that he can visit Mary Jane. We also hope that when he meets President Widodo he won’t forget Mary Jane who is still on death row. My child has been there for six years, has already went through two presidents, and is now under a third one. Our wish to President Duterte, we hope that under him we can finally have Mary Jane by our side.]
