  • Plus-size model Katrina Gumabao to make her international modelling debut at Melbourne Fashion Week Plus
  • She is the sister of Lady Spikers co-captain Michele Gumabao
  • MFW+ will be on August 25 to 28

2016 is all about body positivity. Gone are the days that models come only in size zeros, as plus-size and full-figured models,  such as Ashley Graham – who is the first plus-size model to be in the cover of Sports Illustrated – are gaining so much positive attention recently that continues to break down the barriers in the fashion industry. And of course, the Philippines has a representative in this new movement.

Meet Katrina Gumabao, the only Filipina model to walk the runway of Melbourne Fashion Week (MFW) on August 25 to 28 for its first ever plus-size fashion show. She is also the eldest sister of Lady Spiker Michelle Gumabao.

Gumabao shared that she learned about the casting call through Instagram, and despite not being in Australia, she went ahead and sent the organizers her set card and modelling demo reel. She got in but the catch is she has to shoulder all her expenses.

Gumabao, through her participation in an international fashion show, hopes to break the mold and change the bias against plus-sized people in the country.

“Plus-size can be defined as not fitting into the ‘normal’ mold of clothes. It does not necessarily mean you are fat… because all people have fat. It can mean you have bigger thighs, wider hips, bigger boobs,” she told Coconuts Manila.

When asked about her thoughts on body shaming, Gumabao told Cosmopolitan Philippines: “I’m an advocate of body love. I don’t condone unhealthy habits, but there are people who live healthy lifestyles who are just built bigger than normal.”

She shared that she works out every single day and eat healthy in order to stay fit and healthy.

“I’ve lost fifty pounds since January,” she said. “It’s not because I want to be skinny. I want to be strong. I want to be able to run and walk and not have pain in my knees and ankles.”

According to Gumabao, MiLK Modeling Management, a modeling agency that represent full-figured women, will be in attendance at MFW+,and she hopes to grab their attention.
