A freed National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) peace consultant disclosed that a lot of political prisoners experienced being tortured under the administration of former president Benigno Aquino III.

A devoted member of the Communist Party of the Philippines and an NDFP peace consultant who will fly to Oslo, Norway in time for the peace talks, Alan Jasminez, who was released from prison on Friday, August 19, said torture of political prisoners like him by the police and the military was rampant during the Aquino administration.

“Noong panahon ng Aquino administration, marami sa mga kasamahan namin ang na-torture especially sa Camp Crame at Camp Bagong Diwa. Majority ng mga nakakulong diyan ay dumanas ng torture,” GMA News Online quoted Jazmines as saying.

[During the time of the Aquino administration, a lot of our colleagues were tortured especially in Camp Crame and Camp Bagong Diwa. Majority of prisoners there experienced torture]

“May mga pinapatawag sa opisina at doon hinahampas habang nakatayo at nagbabasa ng Quoran. Meron mga sinusuntok sa tiyan… hinahampas sa binti,” he added.

[There were those who were summoned to an office where they would be hit while standing and reading the Quoran. There were those who were punched in the stomach… whipped on the legs.]

He also told about a political prisoner who was shot in the butt and was being forced to drink poison.

The prisoner had so many torture marks, Jasminez said.

Another newly-released NDFP consultant, Jaime Soledad, recounted the times he was beaten by a military official. He said the official repeatedly beat him on the face with his own bag.

The freed political prisoners expressed their gratitude to President Rodrigo Duterte for their freedom.
