Memory Monday: Billy Crawford sings theme song for first Pokemon movie

MANILA, Philippines – Did you know that Billy Crawford sang the theme song for the first Pokemon movie ever made?

Crawford, sang Pokemon Theme 2 (also popularly known among fans as “I Wanna Be the Very Best”) for Pokemon: The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back in 1998. He joined an ensemble cast of singers for the movie’s soundtracks, including girl band M2M, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, *NSYNC, Vitamin C, and Aaron Carter.

The original singer of the theme song which was also used as the opening song of the Pokemon TV show’s first season was Jason Paige.

In an interview during the movie’s premier in California, Crawford, who was only 17 at the time, even demonstrated his chops by singing a part of the song. He also revealed that his favorite Pokemon was none other than Pikachu.

Garnering $163.6 million at the box office against a budget of $30 million, the first Pokemon movie received critical acclaim for its in-depth story despite being a children’s movie.

The plot centers around Mewtwo, a powerful genetically-cloned Pokemon who tries to wipe out mankind after losing faith in humanity. Along the way, he encounters with the protagonists led by Ash Ketchum who successfully demonstrates to him the good side of humanity and convinces him that not all people are bad.

The newest incarnation of the franchise, the reality-based gaming app Pokemon Go, has been well-received across the globe because of its gameplay which allows fans to “catch” their own Pokemon across real-world locations.

Filipino fans also rejoiced after the app was made available in the country over the weekend. However, authorities have warned players to be mindful of their surroundings to avoid danger and accidents.
