Newly-appointed National Youth Commission Chairperson Aiza Seguerra promised that she will do her best to help President Rodrigo Duterte achieve his goal of giving a voice to the marginalized groups in our country, including the Lumad and the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) community.
Seguerra has been appointed for a three-year term and her wife, Liza Diño has been appointed as the chairperson of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) for a period of three years as well.
Both of them are known supporters of the Lumad cause.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News on Friday, August 12, the singer-songwriter said: “Ang gusto ng presidente ay pagkatapos ng term niya eh wala nang masasabing marginalized people. Gusto niya lahat tayo ay magkaroon ng boses.”
[The president wants that when his term ends, there won’t be marginalized people anymore. He wants all of us to have a voice.]
Seguerra emphasized that as the NYC chairperson, she wants to go to the place of the Lumad and listen to them.
Aside from the Lumad, she will also meet with groups representing the out-of-school youth and the urban poor and hear them out as well.
Seguerra also addressed the criticisms thrown by people towards celebrity Duterte supporters like her. They’re accused of being not qualified to be given government positions and they were just appointed because they supported the president.
“Hindi ko rin masisi ang (I can’t blame the) netizens on why they think that way. Pero lahat tayo (But all of us), we deserve a chance to show what we can do. And sana alam ninyo na (And I hope that you all know that) we are not here for anything else but because we want to help, we want to do things for my countrymen,” she said.
Aside from Seguerra and Diño, other Duterte supporters from the entertainment industry who were given government positions are Arnell Ignacio (AVP of the Community Relation and Services Department, PAGCOR), and Kat de Castro (Tourism Undersecretary).
Jimmy Bondoc was previously reported to be appointed as the AVP for Entertainment of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). However, he disclosed that his appointment was not finalized. He is waiting if the president will give him a post in PTV4.
