Panelo: All presidents – good, bad, handsome or ugly – entitled to be buried at Libingan ng mga Bayani

Presidential Legal Counsel Atty. Salvador Panelo said the late president Ferdinand E. Marcos, Sr. is very much qualified to be interred at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ Cemetery).

As mentioned in an Inquirer article, Panelo told reporters during a chance interview that for being a former president and soldier, Marcos can be buried at the heroes’ cemetery.

“The regulation issued by the Armed Forces of the Philippines is very clear: those who are entitled to be interred in the Libingan ng mga Bayani are, among others, soldiers and presidents, so on the basis of that the late president Marcos is entitled to be buried there,” Panelo said.

He added: “It does not distinguish whether a president is good, bad, handsome or ugly. If you’re a president, you’re entitled to be buried there.”

Critics of the late president are one in saying that he does not deserve to be buried at the heroes’ cemetery because he is no hero. They claimed Marcos’ war medals were fake.

But Atty. Panelo argued that the regulation does not distinguish whether a soldier has fake medals or not.

“According to some oppositors, president Marcos had fake medals but regulation does not distinguish whether soldier has fake medals or not. Fact is, president Marcos was a soldier, he fought the Japanese, created a maharlika group and we cannot dispute that, so as a soldier, he is entitled to be buried at Libingan ng mga Bayani,” he said.

The late president is set to be buried and will be accorded state honors at Libingan ng mga Bayani on September 18.
