Vice President Leni Robredo flew to Thailand on her first official foreign trip as Philippines’ second highest official and was honored as one of the “Honorary Outstanding Women in 2016” from Southeast Asia.
According to an article published by Philippine Daily Inquirer, the recognition was given by Thailand’s Queen Sirikit on Thai Women’s Day.
The event also commemorated the 70th anniversary of the accession to the throne of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit’s 84th birthday.
The vice president’s official website said VP Robredo was honored for her “dedication for women in her country to improve women’s rights and gender equality including overcoming barriers to be a successful ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) woman leader.”
Robredo said it is not just an honor for her but also for all Filipino women.
“This gives us a message that Filipino women are being recognized not only in Thailand but also in the community of ASEAN nations”, she added.
She also addressed the women leaders just like her who attended the event.
“You being here not only as representatives for your women’s clubs but also of the government is again sending a very strong message to everyone that women are here, again not to compete with men but women are here to send a message of unity, of compassion, of justice, of peace. We are the best ambassadors of all; I think the men know that,” she told them.
She emphasized that it is their responsibility to make sure that the generations of women after them will be more empowered than they already are today.
VP Robredo is also set to visit the United States to speak at the 12th National Empowerment Conference of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations scheduled for Aug. 6 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
