CEBU, Philippines – Mandaue City Mayor Luigi Quisumbing confirmed that one of the two men who were recorded assaulting a truck driver and his passenger Brgy. Looc, Mandaue was indeed a policeman.
“Update: The two men have been positively identified. The City has contacted the victims and will be assisting in filing cases against them. One of the two men was indeed a police officer and I would like to especially thank Col. Alanas and the MCPO for the swift action. The offender will be investigated and immediately have his firearm withdrawn and placed on floating status pending the results of the investigation,” read his Facebook post.
Quisumbing also vowed to keep his city safer following the incident as “we will review our protocols for incidents that involve public safety.”
Danica Njela Mier Alcontin, the original uploader of the video which showed the two motorcycle-riding men striking the victims as well as a bystander while brandishing their firearms, identified the erring cop as PO3 Renato Inot.
Aside from sharing a copy of Inot’s relief order and transfer to the city police’s holding and accounting unit, Alcontin also shared on her Facebook the message of Quisumbing’s chief of staff Atty. Elaine Bathan promising the filing of criminal and administrative charges against Inot and support for the victims’ legal needs.
She is seeking help to identify Inot’s companion who remains at large and in hiding.
The video, which has since gone viral, showed Inot and his companion striking and threatening a truck driver, his companion and a bystander along a busy street.
According to Alcontin, the men — who appeared drunk — confronted the truck driver for an unknown traffic violation and assaulted him shortly afterwards.
