A waiter in Dallas, Texas got the shock of his life after receiving a generous tip amounting to $500 from a customer whose bill is only $0.37.
It turned out, there’s a heartwarming story behind the tip and it’s all because of the waiter’s own selfless act of kindness.
Kasey Simmons works serving table at the Applebee’s Little Elm. On Tuesday night, he was surprised to find a $500 tip from one of the tables he served.
Along with the money is a folded napkin with a handwritten explanation on the generous tip.
“They ordered the cheapest thing on the menu of flavored water–it was $0.37,” Simmons told WFAA-TV. “But my tip was about 50,000 percent.”
Simmons recalled he was inside the Kroger grocery store the day before when he saw a distraught old lady standing. Many people ignored her but the 32-year-old waiter decided maybe he could help her.
He spoke with the sad woman to cheer her up and also paid for her groceries which cost around $17.
“It was only $17, but it’s not about the money,” narrated Simons. “It’s about showing someone you care.”
Simmons found out later in the note on the napkin that the old woman was upset because she struggled to live a normal day which happens to fall on the third year anniversary of her husband’s death.
The customer who gave the $500 turned out to be the woman’s daughter who found out about Simmons’ kindness from her mother.
While he did not give the daughter’s name, Simmons said the note reduced him to tears.
“On one of the most depressing days of the year … you made my mother’s day wonderful,” CNN quoted the woman’s daughter as saying in the note.
“You insisted on paying. Told her she is a very beautiful woman. I have not seen this woman smile this much since dad died,” the daughter added.
Simmons’ inspiring story has tugged at the heartstrings of many netizens and has gone viral on social media.
Explaining how he feels, Simmons said he got up everyday just “like the Cowboys winning the Super Bowl”.
