- Youtube star Gigi Gorgeous was detained at the Dubai International Airport
- She was denied entry for being transgender
- “Imitation of women by men” is reportedly illegal in Dubai
Youtube star Gigi Gorgeous was reportedly temporarily detained at Dubai International Airport on Tuesday, August 9, after being denied entry for being a transgender woman.
The Canadian transgender model shared her frightening experience through an Instagram post of a photo of Gigi embracing her friend Nats Getty, after the latter came to pick her up from the airport.
She wrote: “After being detained and held at the Dubai airport for over 5 hours, this was the moment my baby came to rescue me.”
“Yesterday was one of the scariest moments of my entire life and I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. How you can be denied entry somewhere just because of who you are is seriously disgusting and also very scary. This further proves the need for change,” Gigi added.
“I am now on my way to somewhere much more accepting. Safe and sound and happy,” she said, assuring her fans that the ordeal is done.
While Gigi was born Gregory Lazzarto, she officially changed her name to Gigi Loren in 2014, and claims that she has already updated passport. Gigi also says her passport describes her as female. However, Dubai airport police claims her passport identified her as male and the passport photo showed Gigi as a man.
Gigi recounted the incident in an interview with TMZ. She claims that an immigration officer said: “I was told you are transgender. You cannot come into the country.”
“Imitation of women by men” is reportedly illegal in Dubai under the “Indecent Acts Law”, which may be punishable through fines, deportation, or detention.
