Cotabato City Mayor Japal Guiani has passed away after succumbing to cardiac arrest. He was 56 years old.

The city mayor was brought to a hospital in Davao City just hours earlier to be treated for complications secondary to diabetes, before suffering a heart attack that caused his death.

The mayor’s secretary Aniceto Rasalan told ABS-CBN News that Guiani had filed for a sick leave last August 3 due to arthritis and again on September 3 after falling ill. However, his death still came as a surprise to city hall employees.

Vice Mayor Cynthia Guani, the mayor’s sister, served as the acting mayor while he was hospitalized.

In its official Facebook page, the City Government of Cotabato announced that arrangements are being made to bring back the remains of the mayor to his hometown at the soonest possible time.

“It is with deepest sadness that we inform our fellow Cotabateños that our beloved Mayor Japal J. Guiani, Jr. has passed away this morning. He was hospitalized in Davao City and early this morning, he experienced cardiac arrest. As of the moment, his remains are still in Davao but the family has assured that he will be transported to Cotabato City anytime today. Today is indeed a day for mourning for Cotabato City. We request everyone to say a little prayer for our beloved Mayor Jojo,” the city announced.

Guani had served as an official in Cotabato City for around two decades; rising through the ranks as Councilor, Vice Mayor, and eventually as Mayor.

He was on his second term as Mayor at the time of his death after being re-elected during the May polls.
