MANILA, Philippines – House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said Edgar Matobato, the self-confessed Davao Death Squad (DDS) member, don’t have anything new to say in his testimony on Thursday implicating President Rodrigo Duterte in alleged summary killings in Davao City.

An article by Marc Jayson Cayabyab for Inquirer said that Alvarez called Matobato a “recycled witness” and he said the same statements several years ago about the existence of the Davao Death Squad, the time when Senator Leila de Lima was still chair of the Commission on Human Rights, but no case was filed.

Alvarez said he is from Davao and the only DDS he knows is “Die-hard Duterte Supporters”, of which he is one.

“Ako taga-Davao ako at wala naman akong alam na Davao Death Squad (DDS). Die-hard Duterte Supporter, DDS, walang Davao Death Squad. Ako miyembro ako ng DDS,” Alvarez said.

[“I’m from Davao and I’m not aware of Davao Death Squad (DDS). I only know about Die-hard Duterte Supporter, DDS, but there’s no Davao Death Squad. I’m a member of DDS.”]

An article by Barbara Ann Mijares for ABS-CBN News quoted Alvarez saying that de Lima’s motives for leading an investigation on killings amid the Duterte administration’s war on drugs should be looked into.

Alvarez added that the lower House will start next week its own inquiry on the proliferation of illegal drugs when de Lima was Justice Secretary.

The House Speaker said new witnesses will be presented in the investigation.
