JAKARTA, Indonesia – President Rody Duterte said the US can do better in assisting the Philippines and at the same time thanked China for its generosity in assisting his government’s war against drugs.
The statement was made after Duterte had an international spat over the US government’s call urging his administration to respect human rights in its war against illegal drugs.
Duterte thanked America for its generosity and help in aiding the Philippines in defending its borders, however, he implied that America could do better.
“We are the recipients of so many things from America. Thank you for your generosity. But they sold us only two FA-50s. But they never gave us the missiles and the bullets and the cannons to fire from those planes,” he said.
“I would like to thank China for being so generous to us,” Duterte said in a speech in front of Filipinos during a gathering in Indonesia.
An article by ABS-CBN News said that Duterte confirmed that China is one of the countries helping the Philippines in building rehabilitation centers for drug addicts.
“Only China ang magtulong sa atin. Ang America, they just gave you principles of law and nothing else,” Duterte said.
(“Only China will help us. America just gave principles of law and nothing else.”)
An article by Tricia Aquino for Interaksyon said that Duterte pointed out that millions of Filipino parents were working “their ass to death” overseas in order to afford sending their kids to school and only to return home and find their children addicted to drugs.
He said that the influx of drugs “has destroyed the fabric of our society.”
“It has created dysfunctional families here and there, and eventually it will destroy the generation. That’s why I said, if you do drugs in this country, I will kill you. Why? Because you will destroy a whole generation,” the President said.
Duterte also mentioned that there are “only two options” when it comes to the country’s relations with China.
“There are only two options there. We talk or we fight. For the Philippines to fight China, it will be slaughter, so we talk. We cannot match [them],” he said.
