President Rodrigo Duterte warned of future possible terrorist attacks; telling the military to train in becoming intelligence operatives in order to prevent future attacks by groups such as the Abu Sayaff.
“You have to reorient and reinvent yourself because itong [this] terrorism, just like itong [this] front war [in Mindanao] may kasaling [also has] urban terrorism… So you have to train more, you have to reinvent yourself from a soldier in uniform to all of you being intelligence operatives,” he told soldiers, as previously quoted by GMA News.
The President raised the possibility of similar attacks, such as the one which occurred at the Roxas Night Market in Davao City where at least 15 people died and dozens more were injured.
“Ang kalaban ninyo dito sabog, so magbantay kayo. [Your enemy here is explosion, so watch out.] Just like in the Middle East, may mga paputok ng kotse iyan.. Hindi iyan makontento sa Davao na bomba bomba [they have car explosives… They will not be contented with bombs like in Davao]. So it’s a long fight ahead,” he said.
In order to do so, Duterte said that soldiers must also be trained in profiling potential bombers or terrorists; similar to what is being done by the police.
The President assured the military, however, that the administration would support them in the fight against terrorism by providing additional equipment and improving hospitals, among others.
“What I can assure you is for as long as I’m president, you will have all equipment and weaponry necessary to win the war or at least to defeat them in every fight. All of you will be given the protection, armor, and the weapons that you desire,” he said.
