- Daughter of former strongman told father’s critics to forgive him for his sins
- She said he’s only human, can make mistakes too
- She also said forgiveness will enable detractors to move on and find peace
MANILA, Philippines – To err is human, to forgive is divine.
Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos had this to say to critics of her father, the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, even as she urged them to find it in their hearts to forgive him.
With the Supreme Court tackling the issue of her father’s burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, the younger Marcos said she hopes their detractors can forgive him since he is also human and can make mistakes just like anyone else.
“Sana anuman ang kasalanan ng aking ama, sapagkat hindi naman niya kailanman sinabi na siya ay hindi tao lamang na nagkakamali at nagkakasala, mahanap na nila ang kapatawaran,” ABS-CBN quoted her as saying during her father’s 99th birthday celebration in Batac City, Ilocos Norte.
[I hope that whatever the sins of my father were, because he never said that he is not a mere human who errs and commits sins, they can find forgiveness for him.]
The governess said forgiveness will allow their critics to move on and find their own peace.
“Sa pagpapatawad sa atin, sa aking ama, sa pagpapatawad, sana mapawi na rin ang galit nila at sila mismo ay mabigyan ng kapayapaan at katahimikan,” she said.
[In forgiving us, my father, in forgiving, I wish that their anger will be assuaged so they can have peace and tranquility.]
Marcos also thanked her family’s supporters — especially from the ‘Solid North’ — for continuing to support them.
“I would like to thank each and everyone of you that in these 30 years that he has been away from us, the family knew Ilocanos were the ones who gave us strength and love that we were able to carry on,” she said.
