The award-winning movie Ma’ Rosa is the Philippines’ official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category in the Oscars.

In an article written by Reyma Buan-Deveza of ABS-CBN News, it was disclosed that Edgardo Vinarao, who heads the Film Academy of the Philippines’ selection committee for the Oscars, announced that Brillante Mendoza’s film will represent the country in the prestigious Academy Awards.

“I’m very happy that I was chosen. I’m really very happy. Of course, first step pa lang ito [this is just the first step],” Mendoza said.

Jaclyn Jose, who became the first Filipino to win the Best Actress Award at the Cannes International Film Festival, is the lead character in the movie which tells the story of a mother who runs a store and sells drugs on the side with her husband to make ends meet. The couple gets arrested, leaving their four children to try and buy their parents’ freedom from corrupt policemen.

Aside from Ma’ Rosa, seven other movies were included in the shortlist for Philippines’ Oscars entry. The other films are Felix Manalo, Honor Thy Father, Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis, Dukot, Pamilya Ordinaryo, Ang Hapis at Himagsik ni Hermano Puli, and Tuos.
