A Samsung Note 2 device phone began emitting spark and smoke during a flight from Singapore to Chennai, India on Friday, September 23.
According to an article published by International Business Times, the passengers onboard the IndiGo flight, 6E-054, alerted the cabin crew after they noticed smoke emerging from an overhead luggage compartment.
They found the smoking Samsung Galaxy Note 2 device in a piece of hand luggage and the cabin crew effectively dealt with the situation by using a fire extinguisher before submerging the device in a bucket of water.
The airline revealed that the aircraft made a normal landing at Chennai airport, and all passengers were deplaned as per normal procedure.
A spokesperson for India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DCGA) revealed in a statement that the DCGA plans to issue an advisory to airlines warning all passengers to keep their Samsung Galaxy Note devices switched off during the entire duration of the flight or avoid bringing them when they travel.
As for Samsung, the company released an official statement over the incident which read: “We are aware of an incident involving one of our devices. At Samsung, customer safety is our highest priority.
We are in touch with relevant authorities to gather more information and are looking into the matter.”
This incident comes after Samsung issued a worldwide recall of its latest device, Samsung Galaxy Note 7, after a lot of reported incidents involving its alleged faulty batteries which can cause the device to catch fire while it’s being charged or being used.
However, unlike Samsung Galaxy Note 7, there have been no previous reports of similar issues involving the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 which was fist released in 2012.
