- Pangilinan confirmed Sharon indeed performed at Bilibid in July 2012
- However, the ‘Megastar’ supposedly sang four songs only in support of an outreach program
MANILA, Philippines – Senator Francis ‘Kiko’ Pangilinan has released a statement explaining his wife Sharon Cuneta’s performance inside the National Bilibid Prison more than 4 years ago.
A copy of the statement has been published on the Senate’s official website and Pangilinan’s personal website.
The statement confirmed that the local ‘Megastar’ indeed performed at Bilibid on July 10, 2012, but it was for the taping of her defunct talk show with TV 5, “Kasama mo Kapatid,” which had an episode featuring the life of inmates.
The singer actress supposedly “sang four songs for the closing portion, which is the customary format of the show.”
“She sang “Maging Sino Ka Man,” “Tubig at Langis,” “Kahit Konting Pagtingin,” and “Kahit Maputi Na ang Buhok Ko” but only to support RockEd’s outreach program for prisoners,“ the statement read.
Earlier on Tuesday, convicted inmate Rodolfo Magleo claimed at the Lower House hearing that Bilibid had been turned into a “Little Las Vegas” where a number of celebrities held concert inside during numerous events.
Magleo, a former police chief inspector convicted for kidnapping, named these famous singers and celebrities as Mocha Girls, Rufa Mae Quinto, Ethel Booba, Sharon Cuneta, and Freddie Aguilar.
RockEd Philippines founder Gang Badoy confirmed on Twitter that Sharon performed for the inmates out of her kindness and generosity. Badoy said her group had been organizing concerts for the prisoners since 2007.
Below is Pangilinan’s statement in full:
“On July 10, 2012, Sharon went to the New Bilibid Prison for the taping of her talk show, “Kasama mo Kapatid,” which had an episode featuring the life of inmates. She sang four songs for the closing portion, which is the customary format of the show. She sang “Maging Sino Ka Man,” “Tubig at Langis,” “Kahit Konting Pagtingin,” and “Kahit Maputi Na ang Buhok Ko” but only to support RockEd’s outreach program for prisoners.”
“However, if people who heard the testimony at the House this morning are interested, my wife will have a special concert on October 15 and 22, 8 p.m. at the Theatre at Solaire. We are sure that this concert will be livelier and more enjoyable than the outreach program in Bilibid.”
