- President Duterte is confident that Senator De Lima would be jailed
- De Lima will be jailed because of testimonial evidence, the president said
- After the congressional probe, several charges would be filed against the senator, charges for which bail is not an option
President Rodrigo Duterte is confident that Senator Leila De Lima will go to prison for her alleged involvement in the proliferation of illegal drugs inside the New Bilibid Prison.
“Makukulong talaga siya, sigurado ‘yan because of the testimonial evidence,” the President told reporters covering Malacañang Palace.
[She will be jailed, that’s for sure, because of testimonial evidence]
Senator De Lima is currently the subject of a congressional probe on the alleged illegal drug trade inside the penitentiary. Several witnesses, including high-profile inmates and officials of the Bureau of Corrections, have testified that the lady senator from the Bicol region allowed illegal drugs to proliferate in Bilibid in exchange for money.
As mentioned in a Rappler article dated September 26, 2016, President Duterte said several charges would be filed against Senator De Lima, charges for which bail is not an option.
Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre said he is set to file charges against De Lima based on the testimonies of the witnesses.
The witnesses said convicted kidnapper Jaybee Sebastian cornered the drug trade inside the national penitentiary with the blessing of then Justice Secretary Leila De Lima. But De Lima claimed Sebastian is a government asset tasked to spy on other inmates.
De Lima denied all the accusations hurled against him by President Duterte. She said the witnesses were tortured into testifying against her.
