- Arrested were Marife Garlit, a former Binibining Pilipinas candidate, and partner Ma. Lovella Rival
- Rival will be facing a non-bailable offense of drug peddling, while Garlit will be charged with drug possession
A former beauty pageant contestant and her lesbian partner were nabbed by police in a drug buy-bust operation in Sampalaoc, Manila on Monday, November 28.
Chief Inspector Wilfredo Sy, who heads the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group – Manila identified the suspects as Marife Garlit, former Binibining Pilipinas candidate who bagged the Miss Photogenic award in 1992, and her girlfriend, Ma. Lovella Rival.
Sy said Rival ranked number three on their list of drug personalities wanted for peddling illegal drugs in Sampaloc area, while Garlit is just a drug user. He said the pair were arrested for drug possession in 2014 and were out on bail when rearrested during the buy-bust operation.
As per an Inquirer story, four sachets of shabu and P100 marked money were seized from Rival, while Garlit was caught in the act of sniffing shabu. Also confiscated from them are an improvised burner, a small transparent plastic sachet, cutter and scissor.
“She’s [Rival] one of the big-time players in the area who sold shabu at a price not lower than P500. For a poor community, where most of the residents are jobless, P500 is considered big money,” Sy said in an interview; adding that Rival will face a non-bailable case of drug pushing, while Garlit will be charged with drug possession.
Rival, however, denied that she’s engaged in drug pushing; claiming she’s just a drug user.
