A habal-habal driver or a person who earns a living by driving motorcycles has taken over the Tawag ng Tanghalan championship from the week-long reign of defending champion Sam Mangubat.
ABS-CBN said in a story that Rommel Callao of Bukidnon got a high score of 94.6% from the judges of the competition hosted “It’s Showtime”.
Callao, who performed the popular hit “Sweet Dreams” by Air Supply defeated defending champion of seven days, Mangubat. Mangubat only got a score of 93% with his rendition of “This I Promise You” of 90’s hit boyband N’Sync.
The habal-habal driver from Bukidnon will be going back to compete with challengers. If he wins for five times, he then levels up to the semi-finals round.
Tawag ng Tanghalan is a singing competition segment in the program. It was derived from the original competition of the same name where big names such as Superstar Nora Aunor, Edgar Mortiz and Pepe Pimentel emerged.
Everyday, a competitor from Metro Manila, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will show off their singing skills. They will be judged by a set of jurors and the one getting the highest score would win the competition and should defend his or her title.
The winning contestants will advance to the semi-final round then to the grand final round, where they can win as much as P150,000 and a gold medal.
