A less fortunate old woman, who just had a merry Christmas after receiving presents from GMA, was the lone casualty in a Quezon City fire; a few days after she got her gifts.
On the evening of Tuesday, December 27, a fire broke out in Quezon City, razing a residential area along NIA Road; leaving one dead, three injured, and around 1,000 families homeless.
On 24 Oras, news anchor Pia Arcangel confirmed that the only fatality in the blaze was an elderly woman — 74-year-old Corazon Tiozon, better known as Lola Coring — who just received Christmas gifts from GMA reporters, through the Magic ng Pasko project last December 20. The love story and the struggles of the old woman and her husband was featured few days before the blaze. That time, Lolo Paciano, 74, shared that he’s working hard to buy medicines for his wife whose back is always aching.
Haplessly, during the fire, Lola Coring was not able to go out of the house because of difficulties in walking, and no one was there to rescue her because Lolo Paciano was not around. Her burned body was found inside the house after the blaze and the only part that remained whole was her heart.
When GMA reporter Saleema Refran visited Lolo Paciano, he said his wife is still alive.
“Buhay pa, sabi nila sa barangay…. Buhay pa…. Sobrang mahal ko si Coring. Habambuhay kami’y magsasama pa,” he said.
[She’s alive. They told me at the barangay hall. She’s alive. I love Coring so much. There is still a lifetime waiting for us to share.]
