Late senator Santiago is PUP’s ‘Online Personality of the Year’

Even after her demise, the late senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago continued to receive recognition. This time, she was chosen as the Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ “Online Personality of the Year”.

In an article posted on ABS-CBN, it was disclosed that Santiago’s family was informed by PUP President Emmanuel de Guzman that an award for the late senator will be given during the Mabini Media Awards which will be held on December 2. She was chosen as the “Online Personality of the Year” after more or less 65,000 students voted for her.

Earlier, Santiago was also awarded as an “Outstanding Citizen of Quezon City” by the Quezon City government. The award was given by Mayor Herbert Bautista and other Quezon City officials at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ortigas. Santiago was represented by her sister, former CHED Commissioner Dr. Nenalyn P. Defensor.

Santiago was widely popular among the youth because of her eloquent speeches, and occasional jokes and one-liners, that were quoted and shared by social media users.

Miriam’s death

The well-known Iron Lady of Asia died in her sleep last September 29 at the age of 71.

Miriam had been battling stage four lung cancer for some years. She passed away at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City, where she had been taken on and off for complications of her ailment.

Santiago was a Filipino politician; notable for having served in all three branches of the Philippine government – judicial, executive, and legislative. Some of her alma maters include University of the Philippines, University of Michigan, Oxford University, Maryhill School of Theology, University of California, Harvard University, and Cambridge University.

She ran for Philippine presidency thrice; in 1992, 1998 and in 2016, but lost.
